Scripture and Sermon Notes
John 17:3 ESV - And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
1 John 4:13-31 ESV - 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
Four Certain Truths for Uncertain Times
1. We Possess the Spirit of God
1 John 4:13 ESV - By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
Acts 2:38 ESV - And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:16 ESV - The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
2. We Confess the Son of God
1 John 4:14-15 ESV - 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
3. We Experience the Love of God
1 John 4:16-18 ESV - 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us.
Matthew 10:28 ESV - And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
2 Timothy 1:7 ESV - for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
4. We Exhibit the Love of God
1 John 4:19-21 ESV - We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
1 John 3:18 ESV - Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
