The Request of James and John

35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:35-45 ESV

Mark 10:45 ESV - 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:43-44 ESV - 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.

2 Corinthians 8:9 ESV - 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

1. The Prophesy of His Coming

Daniel 7:9-10 ESV - 9 “As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire. 10 A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.

Daniel 7:13-14 ESV - 13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

Philippians 2:9-11 ESV - 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

2. The Manner of His Coming

Mark 10:45 ESV - 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve

Philippians 2:6-8 ESV - 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

3. The Purpose of His Coming

Mark 10:45 ESV - 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Romans 6:17-18 ESV - 17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

The giving of his atonement was…

1. Voluntary

John 10:11 ESV - 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

John 10:17 ESV - 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.

John 10:18 ESV - 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

John 19:30 ESV - 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

2. Priceless

1 Peter 1:18-19 ESV - 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

3. Vicarious

Isaiah 53:4-6 ESV - 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned--every one--to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

4. Definite

Mark 10:45 ESV - For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

John 6:37 ESV - 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

Mark 10:45 ESV - 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
