Jesus Before the Council

53 And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” 61 But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death. 65 And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows.

Mark 14:54-65 ESV

1. The Phony Arraignment

Mark 14:53-54 ESV - 53 And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire.

2. The Phony Witnesses

Mark 14:55 ESV - 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.

Mark 14:58 ESV - 58 "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.'"

John 2:19 ESV - 19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."

John 11:49-50 ESV - 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish."

John 11:51-52 ESV - 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

3. The Phony Cross Examination

Mark 14:60 ESV - And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?"

Mark 14:61 ESV - 61 But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"

Mark 14:62 ESV - 62 And Jesus said, "I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven."

4. The Phony Sentencing

Mark 14:63-65 ESV - And the high priest tore his garments and said, "What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?"

Acts 4:24-28 ESV - 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, "Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, "'Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed'-- 27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.
