The Crucifixion

21 And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.

Mark 15:21-24 ESV

Luke 9:23 ESV - 23 And he said to all, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

Matthew 10:38 ESV - 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

1 Corinthians 2:2 ESV - 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

Galatians 6:14 ESV - 14 But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Galatians 2:20 ESV - 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

1. The Picture of Discipleship

Mark 15:21 ESV - 21 And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.

Mark 8:34 ESV - 34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Hebrews 11:24-26 ESV - 24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.

2. The Place of Execution

Mark 15:22 ESV - 22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).

Hebrews 13:12-13 ESV - 12 So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. 13 Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured.

Hebrews 13:14 ESV - 14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.

Mark 15:23 ESV - 23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.

3. The Pain of Crucifixion

Galatians 3:13 ESV - 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us--for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree"

Colossians 3:2-4 ESV - 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
