Sermon Notes

7 In him (Jesus) we have redemption through his (Jesus) blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his (the Father) grace, 8 which he (the Father) lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his (the Father’s) will, according to his (the Father’s) purpose, which he (the Father) set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him (Jesus), things in heaven and things on earth.

Ephesians 1:7-10 ESV

1. Redemption Through His Blood

Romans 5:12 ESV - 12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—

1 Peter 1:18-19 ESV - 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

Hebrews 9:12 ESV - 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

Mark 10:45 ESV - 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Revelation 5:9 ESV - 9 And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,

2. Forgiveness of Our Trespasses

Matthew 26:27-28 ESV - 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Hebrews 10:3-4 ESV - 3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Hebrews 10:12-14 ESV - 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

Romans 5:18-19 ESV - 18 Therefore, as one trespass (Adam) led to condemnation for all men (us), so one act of righteousness (Jesus) leads to justification and life for all men (us). 19 For as by the one man's disobedience (Adam) the many were made sinners (us), so by the one man's obedience the many (us) will be made righteous.

3. The Riches of His Grace

Ephesians 1:7-8 ESV - 7 In him (Christ) we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his (Father) grace, 8 which he (Father) lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight

4. All Wisdom and Insight

Colossians 1:15-17 ESV - 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

The Lord’s Supper

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 ESV - 23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
