1. What does it mean to be blessed?

2 Corinthians 13:5 ESV - 5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?--unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

Matthew 5:20 ESV - 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

2. Who are the blessed?

Matthew 5:3 ESV - 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Isaiah 66:2 ESV - 2 All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.

Luke 18:9-14 ESV - 9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.' 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

James 4:6 ESV - 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

Matthew 12:20 ESV - 20 a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory;

Matthew 11:28 ESV - 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

2 Corinthians 8:9 ESV - 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

Isaiah 53:3-4 ESV - 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

3. What do the blessed receive?

Matthew 5:3 ESV - 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
