Sermon Notes
Matthew 28:18-20 ESV - 18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
Acts 2:41 ESV - 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
Acts 8:12-13 ESV - 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed.
Acts 9:18 ESV - 18 And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized;Acts 16:30-33 ESV - 30 Then he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 31 And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." 32 And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family.
Why do we believe Christian baptism is the immersion of the believer in water?
1. We immerse because that is what the word baptize means in the original language. The normal words for sprinkling or pouring are not used in the NT for baptism.
2. Immersion of believers is clearly what took place in the New Testament.
John 3:23 ESV - 23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized
Acts 8:38 ESV - 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
Mark 1:9-10 ESV - 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
3. Immersion is the correct picture of what has happened to the believer spiritually
Romans 6:3-4 ESV - 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
1 Corinthians 6:11 ESV - 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
